When the ciewer closes one eye, one part of the text should become visable, when the other eye is closed, the other part of the text becomes visable.

Aura crafting & binding

Dissapointed massively in myself that I have not been able to produce this version as it should be, half secreenprinted. And also that I have not had time to make any other deliverables. However, the concept is so strong that I hope this helps.

Out of time

Being realistic, if I was to screenprint the green ink of this publication, I would not get other deliverables finished. I have had to comprimise on my most exciting brief which is gutting. I really hope to make this the way I intended after submission as it would be a great portfolio piece, but currently still needs work on packaging and finishing.

This anaglyph green will have to be mixed again in the future...

Japanese paper ordered!

I need to fit 16 pages on the Japanese paper and a cover some spare! I can fit all the book on 1x sheet of 610x910mm but I have ordered 5 to be safe! This is how many pages I can fit on one sheet...

Progress surgery

My progress surgery with Fred today was brilliant. I was anxious that no tutor has really seen my briefs but I am confident on my progress of them.

Digital mock-up

I wanted to see what the layout of my japanese red and green digital and screenprinted book will look like when complete so I printed out a quick digital version. The text is a bit small and grainy I will have to up the quality in the digital print facilities as i'm not happy with it on this publication. I need to find out the correct red to print as I have lost my notes!

Also need to still work on a front cover.

Imagery?

Had an idea of using an image to introduce each chapter in the book. I wanted close up imagery of both manual and digital printing techniques which will be made to make the book.

Front cover

Working on ideas on reproduced imagery for the front cover. A spirograph theme emerged but not sure how happy I am with it.

Red on rice paper

As I have now decided to use japanese rice paper I took a sample to test the different reds on in digital print... It works!

Japanese binding

As the book will now be screenprinted and digitally printed I am not going to double side it. It will be an added complication which I don't think will actually add anything to the character of the book. If anything there would be too much information to view at one time and detract from the disappear effect.

After alot (and I mean alot) of thought and decision changing, I decided to test a japanese bind as this method is one which I have not used before and one where the book will not lay flat. This will be alright as it is only singe page.

The method of production is much more in-depth that I first realised and have made me decide to use japanese rice paper also to keep with tradition. I am very excited about this project now!

Anaglyph red

I have done lots of tests to find a correct red which disappears when viewed through the red filter of the anaglyph glasses but it is so difficult! Initially testing the colours on matt stock as I think I will be using this I have found some which come close...

Roger and Neil

My idea to letterpress the whole booklet is silly, way too time consuming. However I am really not keen on having both colours digitally printed as it completely ruins the concept. One colour needs to be a manual printing process and the other a digital process so it makes sense when they disappear and when the reader reads a certain bit of text.

Spoke to Neil and Roger in the Vernon Street printroom and they were such a great help! I couldn't letterpress the correct colour even if I did have enough time to set all the type as it uses a fluorescent green which apparently is used in bank notes and extremely hard to get hold of! Letterpress out the window. Neil said he could mix me up the anaglyph colour needed for screenprint and this would still be a manual process. He suggested both colours being screenprinted but again, this destroys the concept.

They advised me to go to Blenheim and find a red which prints the correct colour to disappear when viewed through the red filter on the 3D glasses. They were a brilliant help and without their knowledge I would have completely balls-ed it up. Neil has done alot of 3D printing and so has supplied me with the correct colours needed to work. Brilliant!

Red and green - overlay

Tested printing red and green acetate and then placing over red and green text. The values of the colours printed are...

I printed block colours of this red and green on clear acetate, and then printed the text in the font and point size which it will be in the publication and over all deliverables.

The green acetate works really well as the text is more visable through it, however, in both cases, the Times New Roman font is pretty light and is very hard to read in some cases. Very disappointed about this, as I have already typeset Times New Roman in 14pt on letterpress and it would take an enormous amount of time to redo this.

Potential deliverables

The zine idea wasn't working as it doesn't fit the zine style, is too thick and would be too expensive o produce in this context. Decided upon the new format of the publication with extracts from my dissertation. Also decided upon other possible deliverables to extend this brief...

Mock-up zine

Initially intended to be a zine... I have overlayed digital with letterpressed text to show how this could work. When red glasses are worn, it will cancel out the red so I need to rework the colours and layout, but this is the rough idea!

Times New Roman and Geneva

Using Time New Roman as the letterpress font and Geneva as the digital font I have produced an overprint effect in InDesign and printed variations. I want it to be hard to read, then when the audience puts on the red glasses, they will only see the letterpressed type and Geneva will disappear, demonstrating the lack of aura when printed.
